The Gas works have started on some of the buildings and some questions were raised by the residents. Please read more below: |
On 09-03-2011 at 06:46am we send the following e-mail to Samantha Parker:
Dear Ms Parker,
I have some concerns regarding the current gas works on the Curnock Estate (please see attached pictures).
1) During the residents meeting on Wednesday 16th February 2011 which I attended, it was mentioned that you will have to move the gas meters closer to the external wall in order to comply with the new regulations (better ventilation). Since the works will only be carried out in some of the blocks on the estate, does that mean that the blocks where the work is not being carried out, will not comply with the new regulations? Please could you clarify this?
2) On the attached pictures the pipes which have been installed are not covered which is aesthetically unpleasing and potentially very dangerous. They are easily within reach of youths who could jump up and swing from them. Please can you confirm if the pipes will eventually be concealed within boxing, or will they be left exposed?
3) If the pipes are not concealed and an accident happened who would take responsibility for the potential loss of life and damages to our properties?
4) Why have the pipes not been installed inside the existing false wooden ceiling, which would be better aesthetically and definitely safer. It seems that the only reason for installing the pipes the way you did, is that it is faster, easier and cheaper. Could you please provide any other reasons?
5) The flats on the second/third floors have the pipes running across the communal balcony. If someone is moving a large sofa or similar and hits the pipes by accident, will they be able to withstand such impact?
6) Could you please provide the names and job titles of the people who were on the meeting with the residents ?
At the moment the pipes look aesthetically awful and extremely dangerous.
I am looking forward for your quick response.

Dear Resident,
I have listed a response to all of your concerns in your email below. I hope that this answers all of your questions.
1. The driver for this pipe replacement job is the condition of the main in the car park. Regulations are not retrospective and only apply to new pipe work installed. When the outstanding blocks in the estate are renewed the current regulations will then apply.
2. The pipes that have been installed cannot be boxed in due to ventilation, this is a safety issue.
3. National Grid cannot be held responsible for any 3rd party damage.
4. Unfortunately we are unable to enclose the pipes inside the existing false wooden ceiling due lack of ventilation (Regulations). This is again for safety reasons and has nothing to do with speed or cost.
5. The pipe work is very robust and fit for purpose.
